Introduction to Another College Student Dreading the Bookstore

WHO: My name is Lauren LeGrande. I am a Public Relations senior and minoring in Psychology. The coolest aspect about my major is I can apply PR to any career field and/or job I am passionate about. The most interesting class I took last semester was Intimate Relationships which fulfilled my psychology minor. I learned there are differences in the definitions of intimacy and how they apply to all relationships, whether they work or not, and how this applies to my everyday relationships.

RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS: My biggest accomplishment last semester was receiving a 95 percent on my 137-paged PR Research book which my classmate/friend and I compiled together. I probably only slept 26 hours during finals week to complete said PR book.

TRAVELS: I traveled to Washington state for New Years and got to spend New Years on the beach. I mentioned Washington in my last post about my favorite places. Then I drove to San Antonio with a group of friends for the weekend.

FAVORITES: I have an unhealthy relationship with all things Disney and Lord of the Rings (books and movies). My current favorite tv show is The 100, its very dark and covers the themes of good versus evil in an unexpected way. The most recent movie I saw was A Monster Calls, it was a tear-jerker and wonderful. My taste in music is varied, I like all genres with the exception of hard metal.

GOALS: In the short term, I hope to work at a nonprofit that works with children whether in Norman or in Oklahoma. In the long-term, I hope to move out of Oklahoma to the northwest (Washington state to be specific) to work in childcare using my PR degree or in a nonprofit position.
A big dream of mine is to open and own a cafe/bakery in Washington, so I can then go to the beach every other weekend.

PETS: I have two cats: Cookie and Pippin.
Cookie is the old grump and loves pizza, he will always try to steal my slice of pizza. He loves to cuddle and will show you his appreciation through love bites.

(Personal photo of Cookie cuddling from November 2016)

Pippin's name was influenced from my love of Lord of the Rings. She was about five weeks old when I found her in my backyard one morning and instantly fell in love with her. She is currently two years old. She is my teenager and keeps Cookie young and fit.

(Personal photo of Pippin from January 2017).

HOBBIES: I like to paint and draw in my free time which I never have since I am in college. I am a self-taught piano player (still ongoing). I recently had the opportunity to go kayaking and I loved it! I want to get into kayaking as a hobby, but it is, surprisingly, an expensive hobby. Maybe later in life, I will be able to kayak.

EXTRA DAY: If I had an extra day, I would want to be able to read for pleasure, reading for college is a different monster to tackle entirely. Honestly, I would catch up on my sleep or take over the world - depends on my mood.

NOTE: I will more than likely add more to the introduction page as the semester continues.

  1. Ha ha, your title made me laugh, Lauren: I just commented on your favorite places post and included a link to the Freebookapalooza with free books online. I would go broke in bookstores... but free books online have saved me and my bank account! And your cats are so cute! Being named for Pippin in LOTR is a nice honor for a cat. You might enjoy this fun Storybook from last semester: Heraclaws. It is Greek mythology told with cats. Totally fun stuff! Maybe Cookie and Pippin will inspire some stories for you this semester. :-)

  2. Hey, Lauren! My name is John Bates, I'm a Communication major and the cool thing about my major is that it can apply to basically any field as well, seeing as people communicate everyday throughout their lives. I was actually enrolled in intimate relationships last semester as well, but I ended up dropping the class at the last minute. I think that's pretty impressive that you and your classmate/friend authored a 137-paged book. That's something that I don't think I would ever do unless I was forced to do it. So kudos to you on that! It's also cool that you like LOTR, and not just the movies. I've read the first book in the series and it's interesting to see how much is different in the books as compared to the movies. What caught my interest the most, although it's a minor detail, is that Arwen never appeared in the first book at all. I found that curious.

  3. Being a public relations major myself I can completely relate to you concerning the work behind the final project for PR Research. The end result did provide a feeling of success and accomplishment finishing the course on a positive note. I think it is awesome the career path you have chosen, no matter which state you end up working in I hope you are able to really make difference in the lives of children who need aid. Now we just need to power through capstone this semester!! Best of luck in it!

  4. Hi, Lauren!
To start off, I love your title haha. I’m an Ad major, so I totally relate to your lack of sleep during dead/finals week to finish off a research book. Those books are killer to everyone’s mental stability. The possibilities for your career path are endless, but I hope one day you will be able to make that café/bakery come true!

    1. Thanks! I'm in capstone now; and if you are too, we have the same client! Microsoft! It's going to be challenging, but I'm looking forward to working with them. And I'm planning on never having a repeat of last semester, it was killer! NEVER PROCRASTINATE!

  5. Hi Lauren, it’s good to meet you! I have had a few friends who took Intimate Relationships and they all say great things about it. I would say making a 95 on something that large is a huge accomplishment! Congrats! I hope you achieve all your goals one day, they sound very rewarding. Washington is a beautiful state and while I have never been to their beaches, I can imagine how pretty they are!

  6. Hey Lauren! It's nice to meet you! I absolutely love your cats! I am having cat withdrawals, and your cats are just too cute! I am jealous about your travels! I would love to see Washington! I hear it is gorgeous! I think it is amazing that you want to work for a nonprofit! It speaks volumes about your character!

  7. I've never read Lord of the Rings, but I've watched all six movies and love them! I love high fantasy and adventure stories. I watched The 100 for awhile too--the premise and story were fantastic. Do you ever watch Studio Ghibli films? If you like Disney, you'd probably like them. They're very whimsical and sweet, and have a lot of adventure and fantasy in them too.

    Nice to meet you!

    1. I love Ghibli films! My favorites are Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Services, My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaä of the Vally of the Wind and Porco Rosso... as you can tell I love Ghibli films, Miyazaki is a genius!

The Lord of the Rings are great books, but Tolkien has a tendency to describe the scenery too much. Otherwise, they are wonderful.

  8. Hi Lauren! I am also a PR major so we have that in common. I can definitely relate to having a major lack of free time for hobbies, college is definitely time consuming. I see that you like Washington, I have been to almost every state and I have never been there so now I would really like to go sometime! I also think owning a bakery would be such a fun job, if I did that my favorite part would probably be meeting all the customers that came in.

  9. I agree, I like to imagine interacting with the regulars who would come into the bakery!

Washington is wonderful, going to the national rainforests is like stepping into an alien world. Its amazing, the northwest coast is the place where I feel the happiest. You should definitely go!

  10. 137 pages! I think my soul would leave me if I ever had to do that. That being said, that's awesome that you even managed to do that and get such a good grade. I hope you rested a lot after that, though! I love the 100!! I'm not caught up yet but Bellamy Blake is beautiful and I love him. Poor Raven, though :(. She never catches a break.

Your dreams sound great and I wish you the best of luck with them! Your cats are really cute, too. Kayaking is fun but when the currents pick up, I get panicked haha and I frantically try to avoid screwing up somehow.

    1. Spoiler Alert: No one can catch a break!
I usually like to kayak on lakes, I haven't tried rivers or the sea yet!

  11. Hi Lauren,

I am also a PR major, and yes, I completely agree that Public Relations is great because you can apply to pretty much every career you might encounter. I am currently working on said PR research book, so It is encouraging to hear it is possible to make an A, but also terrifying to hear you barely slept towards the very end, haha.

  12. Lauren! A PR major sounds like a great option because I think it opens a lot of doors. I also think a psychology minor sounds really interesting and could be super applicable to what you're interested in! I love that you're a LOTR fan; I'm a huge Tolkien nerd myself. I've got a tattoo of Smaug that Tolkien drew for the Hobbit! I love that your cat's name is Pippin; my dog was almost Samwise!

  13. Hi Lauren! I have always wanted to visit Washington state, and your post just further encouraged me to do so! I can't imagine writing a 137 page book... That blows my mind! Well done! I just started watching The 100! I am loving it so far! Also, I am a total cat person, so I enjoyed your pictures of your pets! Thank you for sharing!

  14. Hi, Lauren! I loved reading your introduction and getting to know more about you! Crazy enough, I am a Lord of the Rings fan and absolutely LOVE the 100 (my favorite character is definitely Bellamy)! Not that many people know the show yet so it's always fun to meet another fan! Are you all caught up?
Congratulations on a 95 on your PR paper- that is quite the accomplishment! I can't imagine writing a paper that long so kudos to you on a great job. I hope you have a day off soon so that you can read for fun without the stresses of school and best of luck opening a bakery in Washington! That is such a cool idea and I hope you get to follow through with it!

  15. Wow you seem like you keep pretty busy! That is so cool that you can use a Public Relations degree in any type of work field. It is nice to know you will have variety if you don’t like one job! Your cats are adorable, especially the super fluffy one!! That project you did for school last year sounds like it took a lot of time!

  16. Hi Lauren! Great title to your introduction. I'm so glad we don't have to buy books in this class. Your cats are the cutest things. Have you ever been to the website http://www.catsinsinks.com? It's a blog that is all about cats that are in sinks and I think you have a great submission here! It was great to get to know this little piece of you.

  17. Hi Lauren! It’s nice to meet you. Haha, I loved your intoruction. I hope you get back to painting when you get some time. I feel like old hobbies are the best stress relievers in college. Who doesn’t love Disney? Who is your favorite Disney character? Good luck with the rest of your semester, and hope to see one of your paintings in your blog.

  18. Hi Lauren! I am in Gaylord too! Also, your cats are very adorable. I have a dog and he loves cats. And congrats on getting an A on that paper. I can’t imagine knowing 137 pages worth of stuff on one topic. But luckily you had a partner! Lastly, I think it’s great that you want to get into non-profit and work with children. Best of luck these last two weeks!

  19. Lauren,
It was so great getting to know you. I am surprised I am still meeting new people this late on in the semester. You seem like an ambitious person and that is excellent that you did so well on your paper. I'm not much of a cat person, but you have a really cute cat. I really like the layout of you blog as well. Good luck with the end of your semester.

  20. Hey Lauren, nice to meet you! I see a lot of PR majors taking this course that's interesting! I like the layout of your introduction very organized and simple. I have a lot of friends from Washington state that always boast about how nice it is! Your cat is very cute makes me miss my little fur ball back home! You seem ambitious about your major, good luck with finals!

  21. Hey there! My name is Ali. I am from the Indian Epics class! First off, your cats are adorable and second, I love kayaking too, but you are right on the mark with the expensive thing. Just the same way there is no free time because of college, there is no extra money floating around as far as I am aware. It is so awesome to read about your life and your interests! I hope you are having a good dead week and feeling confident in your finals!!

  22. It's nice to meet you Lauren! Your cats are adorable, by the way. I wish I would have done a psychology minor. Young me wasn't thinking about the impact of it later on. I think for school purposes it would have been a good choice.

I LOVE all things Disney. I annoy everyone with my Disney songs and desire to sometimes watch the Princess movies on repeat.

When I was younger, I was determined to move to either Oregon or Washington. In high school though, I went to Colorado and fell in love. We drove there and I realized that was a long drive alone so I can't imagine coming home for the holidays if I were to live in Oregon or Washington.
